How we operate

The objective of Orr Simpson is to grow relationships with our clients, not necessarily to grow in size as a company. As a result you have a greater importance and thereby more dedicated levels of service than the larger client-bases of most of our competitors:

There are no smoke and mirrors in the way we operate.  We offer openness, honesty and trust and we expect it in return.  We will not shirk from having robust discussions and telling you what we feel you need to hear rather than what you might want to hear.

When taking a brief to find the most suitable candidates we do not rely simply on a job description from our client but work together in face to face meetings where we assess the role requirements, interpersonal relationships and the broader needs and implications.

Our premise is that cultural and behavioural fit is as important as are the professional and academic qualifications, achievements and experience. The crucial need is to identify not just the technical needs but also the behavioural requirements of an individual that will make them outstanding in the role. This means we will not assume or anticipate but seek to properly understand the culture and needs of our client and prospective candidates. We will work hard at understanding your expectations and anticipate exceeding them.

We will produce a blueprint profile of the ideal candidate which clearly identifies and defines your requirements and will then use it as the yardstick by which we measure potential candidates.

Nicholas Orr

Nicholas Orr

Nicholas Orr is married and has two children. Scottish by birth and upbringing he now lives in England having previously worked and lived in a wide variety of places; from Edinburgh to Dorset in the UK, from the USA to Hungary on the international front.

  • Graduated from Sandhurst in 1978, joined The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, leaving at the rank of Captain
  • Relocated to the States, ran NE Communications, an SME communications and infrastructure provider on the East Coast and Mid West
  • Returned to Britain in 1991; invited by Kuwait Petroleum International to form a trading company developing business and acquisitions in the former Soviet Bloc
  • Headhunted to join a non-medical division of the NHS. Conducted business development, change management and the execution of strategies arising from the ministerial re-organisation of the Health and Social Services on behalf of The Cabinet Office

Before becoming a headhunter Nicholas had extensive experience as a client using search and selection and more general recruitment services.  Consequently he is well versed with the failings and pitfalls inherent within the industry. His own headhunting career began in 1999 when he decided that it could be conducted in a more professional, dedicated style. Since then he has executed a series of very successful assignments.

He has a strong interest in equitation, antiques and music. A keen runner, he has taken part in a number of international marathons as well as representing the army in the Top of the Rock race in Gibraltar, although he is now more often seen walking in the rural uplands of the UK.

Tom Simpson

Tom Simpson

Tom Simpson originates from Kent but has lived and worked both abroad and throughout the UK. His wife is a partner in a leading niche legal practice. They have two children and live on a small working farm which Tom manages as a hobby.

  • Sponsored by The Army through a Law degree (LLB Hons) from Leicester University.
  • Commissioned into the Royal Artillery
  • Joined ICI on the fast track management scheme.  Held positions in customer service, sales, marketing, business and product management.  Was a key player in the closure of a £70m business
  • Appointed a Justice of the Peace (JP) in 1994
  • Founded an agri-business in 1995

With the advent of foot and mouth Tom was forced to close his agri-business and ventured into headhunting, which had always held an interest for him since his ICI days. He spent a year with Macallam Executive Recruitment before feeling that his own future and business aspirations lay in a smaller, more client focussed environment.

In the time that Tom has been a headhunter he has successfully won and concluded a large number of assignments in diverse market sectors. Tom joined Nicholas 15 years ago and has been delighted to find someone with a shared value system where the client stands front and centre.

A keen horseman and follower of rugby, Tom has ventured as far as New Zealand to follow his rugby passion.  He also has wide and diverse interests including contemporary music and skiing and has recently discovered the delights of spinning and pilates.
